I moved to Taiwan on Chinese New Year Day 2019. I landed as an American - full of assumptions. I thought I would step off the plane to great feasting and celebration. In reality, Chinese New Year is the only time Taipei stands still. It is a time for family. Most people funnel back to their small towns, leaving the streets silent and the food stalls empty. In 2019 I had just lost my mother and left my friends and family behind for Taiwan. My Chinese New Year in 2019 was a quiet one.

It is now Chinese New Year Day 2022. 3 years have passed. I live near the mountains in Pasadena now. I landed back in LA more Taiwanese than before - a mouth full of my mother tongue and a deeper understanding of my past. To honor this new year, the year of the Tiger, my mother’s year, I made a mix from vinyl found during my time in Taipei. I want my Chinese New Year in 2022 to be a loud one.

I’m pretty mediocre at digging for vinyl but I do have a talent for finding people who find vinyl. Most of the vinyl featured on this mix was given to me by my “Vinyl Uncle” in Taiwan. We met at my favorite flea market: the Fuhe Bridge Flea. There were a few stalls that sold vinyl but he owned the only booth that sold both vinyl *and* tea. He took a liking to me instantly. Back then I had pink hair and bleached brows and I think he liked to be seen at the market chatting to “the foreigner.” Together, we spent many slow afternoons drinking tea and listening to record after record.

When the pandemic kept me in America, I had my records shipped from Taiwan back to me in LA. My records landed like family - familiar and painful. It wasn’t home without them but at the same time listening to them just hurt too much. But as always, time gets to work and the heart heals. I have a new home now: new roots, new faces, new songs but making this mix had me thinking of my past roots, past faces, and past songs.

This mix is filled with the scratches, bumps, and imperfections of nostalgia. I believe it is only when we hear the past can we see the future. I hope these old songs will help ring in the future with the strength and courage of a Tiger.

To me there's no artist like No Translation when it comes to mixing evocative field recordings with moody pastures of synths. 'Inner Distance' sounds extremely deep - peaceful in one moment, surprisingly dark and/or melancholic in another, but always very deep. APORIE
